Madarao Farm

Madarao Farm is a renovated 150 year old farmhouse located at the base of Mount Madarao that backs directly onto the Chikuma River. The great thing about Madarao Farm is that you get the whole property and facilities to yourself, with your friends and family! So it is perfect for families who are travelling to stay for a few days, or even for longer periods to use as a base to tour Nagano and the rest of Japan. It is also pet-friendly with a dog run in the summer months, so you can bring your favorite pet along for the stay.
Madarao Farm has a wood fire stove to keep warm and relax by in colder weather. There are three rooms with tatami mats and one western style bedroom, with a queen size bed. Sleeping for four is provided in the tatami rooms on futons. There is also a couch and fold out sofa bed. There is a bathroom with shower and bath, but also a beautiful public hot spring about 3 km away (Momijiso Onsen). Also the amazing Shibuonsen hot spring town is only 25 minutes away by car.
The house has a large renovated dining room and dining table that is the at the center of the house for meals and entertaining. The house can accommodate 6 people comfortably.
The property is located on a scenic part of the Chikuma river and surrounded by a country garden with a fire pit, vegetable garden and BBQ area. A BBQ and wood chip smoker is available to use. It is close to a number of world class ski resorts, including Shigakogen, which is the largest ski area in Asia! Nozawaonsen Ski Resort is also only around 30 minutes drive away. There are also golf courses, including Madarao Kogen Country Club, which is 5 minutes drive away.
Madarao Farm is also close to the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park, where the Japanese macaque monkeys bathe in natural hot springs. Near to the monkey park is the traditional hot spring town of Shibuonsen. We are also only 15 minutes from the historic town of Obuse. There is also the Joshin-etsu Kogen national park in Shigakogen and many other mountains close by for hiking, including Mount Madarao, which is an easy 15 minute drive away. Madarao is the start point for the 110km long Shinestsu Trail, which is one of Japan's longest hiking routes.
Overall it is a fantastic place to kick back, relax, and experience traditional country Japanese village life.

The Garden
Relax around a fire in the large garden that has a vegetable garden where you can pick fresh seasonal vegetables. The property is in a quiet rural village and is surrounded by rice fields, apple and plum trees as well as grape vines.

The Location
The house is located 30 minutes from Nagano City and is close to Mount Madarao and Lake Nojiri. The world famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is 25 minutes drive away. Nagano Farmstay is also convenient to explore Nozawaonsen, Shiga kogen and Myoko Kogen.

The House
The renovated farmhouse has a wonderful central dining room, three tatami rooms as well as one western style bedroom. It also has a woodfire stove. We also have WiFi, a large screen TV with Apple TV and access to satellite TV.
