How to get to Madarao Mountain area by taxi, bus or train
There are basically two ways for most travellers to get out to Madarao from Tokyo. First there is the bullet train to Iiyama. Second is the Chuo Taxi Service or other similar private shuttle services. If you want convenience and to be quickly on the mountain, then the taxi is best, though it takes a little longer depending on traffic. If you want the fun of the bullet train plus a little extra travel around Nagano and Niigata on the side, then the JR East train pass or the full JR pass are both fantastic options. For travelling between Iiyama station and other ski resorts in the area, there are some great bus services that have been introduced for ski travellers. Be warned, some private taxi travel between resorts can be super expensive. So kick back on a bus once you get here!

ON THE BUSES: NOZAWAONSEN, MYOKOKOGEN AND IIYAMA STATION.

The beauty of Madarao in winter is that it is now an easy bus ride to the Myokokogen and  Nozawaonsen ski areas. So it is a great place to base yourself, to visit these other world class ski areas.

There have also been an increase in shuttle bus connections for the Shinkansen or 'Bullet Train' at Iiyama Station. Madarao is only 20 minutes up the hill from Iiyama. So now it has become easier to access Madarao from Tokyo. You can be in the snow from Tokyo station in under 3 hours!

THE JR EAST TRAIN PASS

If you want to travel on the bullet train out to Nagano and maybe even sneak a couple of days of travelling in between ski runs, then the 5 day JR East travel pass is fantastic value for money.  It's around 18000 yen or 200 dollars for 5 days of unlimited travel in Nagano and Niigata areas and down to Tokyo (see map). Must be used within 14 days of issuance.

There is also the full JR pass that allows you to travel right throughout Japan on any JR train, including the bullet train.

EASY ACCESS FROM THE AIRPORT:
THE CHUO TAXI

The Chuo Taxi service is a convenient  transport service that connects Nagano with Narita and Haneda airports. You can be in Madarao directly from Narita or Haneda in less than 5 hours. The cost is reasonable compared to the price of the train and you are dropped right at the door of your hotel. No problems about carrying luggage through busy train stations.

The Chuo Taxi is usually a mini van that you share with other people travelling to similar areas. You need to book at least 5 days in advance through the Chuo Taxi Website and confirm your flight arrival times so they can meet you. Also have your yen ready as they dont accept credit cards.
